THE CRITICS
FAMOUS ACTRESS IN A TIRESOME PLAY
MRS PATRICK CAMPBELL IN NEW YORK
[TO-DAY'S 'DAILY TELEGRAPH' TELEGRAM]
NEW YORK, Wednesday
Mrs Patrick Campbell received a warm greeting on her reappearance before a New York audience last night, and enjoyed several recalls when the curtain fell on Mr E. F. Benson's Aunt Jeannie. Those people who expected that the author of Dodo would take a place in the front rank of dramatists with his new play were sadly disappointed. Aunt Jeannie is rather tiresome. Its wit is strained, and what is perhaps most important of all in this connection it does not provide Mrs Campbell with a really good opportunity for the display of her special powers. Although a friendly and fashionable audience gave the actress warm applause, the piece is found wanting by the critics.
